A film crew sets up in Linosa to shoot a feature film about the illegal immigrants landing in Lampedusa. The film is Terraferma by Emanuele Crialese and it will later compete at the 2011 Venice Film Festival. Besides describing life on the small island south of Sicily and depicting the island dwellers, whose life is literally turned upside down during the five months of filming, it also tells the story of the movie extras: a group of Africans who find themselves playing the role of the many refugees who abandon their country in search of a better life and who become – at least off-screen – the set’s true protagonists.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen when I arrived on Linosa with my movie camera. The initial idea was to give a voice to the African extras and the inhabitants of the island, who personally experience the reality of immigration every day. They became the stars of this small film that was shot ‘in the shadow of a film.”
